
Adkins was raised by a single young mother in various working-class neighborhoods of London. She was a lover of contemporary pop songs as a child , and was proficient at playing the clarinet and guitar. It wasn't until her teens that she was exposed to Etta James, a blues and rhythm performer, as well as other artists from the 20th century's mid-century, that she started to think about a future career in music. As she was honed in a secondary school of performing arts, funded by the federal government A friend of hers began posting songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. After graduation her music caught the attention of record companies. She signed a contract in the year 2006 with XL Recordings.
